what does LCD mean on the new Televisions?

On the newer Televisions what does LCD mean and what purpose does it serve?

1. It stands for Liquid Crystal Display. The LCDs are how that TV actually produces the picture that you see on the screen.
2. Like the guy above me said, it stands for Liquid Crystal Display. With new HDTV's, your two big options are LCD and Plasma. Plasma is generally good for Bigger TV's, but LCD are getting bigger screen's as well, and Plasma's have problems at higher altitudes. A third option coming in are super-thin LED screens, but there aren't alot of those.
