LCD TV Rating

I bought a Samsung LCD TV. My older LCD had an external speaker jack, but this TV just has a optical audio out?

Do the new LCD TVs have anyway of connecting a regular pair of speakers to it?

  1. They usually do. If there's no analog audio out (red/white RCA jacks) then you can always use the headphone jack and a TRS to 2RCA adapter.
  2. If you have a cable box, you can run the red/white audio cables straight from the cable box to your receiver for stereo. I got a new receiver with optical inputs when I got my first HDTV. But unless you are using an antenna and the tv's internal tuner, only stereo will pass from the tv's optical output. To get surround, you have to use optical cable from an HD cable box to a receiver. So you have the choices of running the red/white out of a cable box if you have one or getting a receiver with optical inputs on it. Many receivers are available on craigslist for less than $75 which would work for you.
  3. Most tv can't handle powering separate speakers that didn't caome with the tv. They have low watts for a power amp 5-10 watts. If you want better sound than the tv can provide you need a receiver or a power amplifier and speakers. Optical output for digital output, rca jacks for analog connections.
