- Upconverting dvd players can use HDMI. Probably what yours is for. It doesn't display 1080p, but it allows the player to upconvert the 480 signal to a kind of pseudo HD with a fill in the lines kind of technique.
- The HDMI cable can help upconvert your regular DVDs to near HD if your DVD player support that feature. If you using the HDMI cable then you don't need to use separate audio cable since HDMI does the video and the audio in one single cable. You are not going to have real HD so don't be disappointed but the quality of your movies should be better than with a regular DVD player.
- The HDMI cable is not restricted to HD. It transfers any digital video and audio from one device to another, in this case from your DVD to your TV. Just connect it up and enjoy.
