1. The Joule rating is a measure of how big a surge the suppressor can absorb. Bigger is better, you can't really over do it. Just remember, the suppressor must have a good ground or it is useless. Also, they do wear out over time and there is really no simple way for a consumer to tell so, replace it every couple of years or after a known surge event.
